Calprotectin is an indication of neutrophil activity. Neutrophil is a white blood cell that participates in inflammatory processes. Thus, high levels of calprotectin in the stool are often associated with inflammatory processes in the bowel such as inflammatory bowel disease. If a patient’s stool has an elevated calprotectin level, it means that the patient is suffering from inflammation in the intestines. However, it does not point out the exact cause or location of the inflammation. The higher the calprotectin level, the more severe the inflammation will be. Faecal calprotectin (or fecal calprotectin) is a biochemical measurement of the protein calprotectin in the stool.Elevated faecal calprotectin indicates the migration of neutrophils to the intestinal mucosa, which occurs during intestinal inflammation, including inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease.

High Levels of Calprotectin Elevated levels of calprotectin, around 250 to 300 µg/g or above, is a red flag and indicator of IBD. Such results mean that you have ongoing inflammation in your GI tract and might experience a flare. Unlike IBS, IBD is an inflammatory process, and the endoscopy procedure is a must to confirm the diagnosis. The gastroscopy showed thinner than normal duodenal lining and gastritis which I already knew about. The stool test came back with high calprotectin level which apparently indicates inflammation and now I have to have a colonoscopy. Which I am terrified of! Im just wondering why do I have inflammation? Calprotectin in stool is 1000, what does this mean?

A fecal calprotectin level is usually high during a flare-up and lower during remission, but the test is not infallible. Calprotectin is a small calcium-binding protein that makes up about 60% of the protein content of neutrophil cytosol. 1 During bowel inflammation, neutrophils migrate to the intestinal mucosa and calprotectin leaks into the bowel lumen. 1 Stool calprotectin is elevated in CD and UC patients compared to IBS patients and healthy control subjects. 4 Calprotectin can also help distinguish IBD from 2019-07-16 2016-07-01 Faecal calprotectin is a biochemical measurement of the protein calprotectin in the stool. Elevated faecal calprotectin indicates the migration of neutrophils to the intestinal mucosa, which occurs during intestinal inflammation; including inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease. Although an elevated calprotectin level indicates inflammation in the bowel, it cannot identify the cause.
A positive result means white blood cells (leukocytes) were found in your stool sample. If you or your child's results show leukocytes in stool, it means there is some kind of inflammation in the digestive tract. The more leukocytes that are found, the higher the chance that you or your child has a bacterial infection. Having a raised calprotectin level generally means you have active inflammation in your body.

When elevated calprotectin is detected in a person’s stool, it helps the doctor to narrow down the list of potential causes and identify the correct diagnosis. Common causes of high calprotectin levels include: The stool, when it is examined under the microscope in the laboratory, will show levels of positive calprotectin. As a general rule, high levels of calprotectin indicate bacterial or parasitic infections, colorectal cancer or certain diseases that cause intestinal inflammation, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Calprotectin is an indication of neutrophil activity. Neutrophil is a white blood cell that participates in inflammatory processes.

What does the test result mean? An elevated calprotectin level is a person's stool indicates that inflammation is likely present in the intestines but does not indicate either its location or cause. In general, the degree of elevation is associated with the severity of the inflammation. Calprotectin is a stool (faecal) test that is used to detect inflammation in the intestines.
